The calculator above works for Port des Torrent, but the numbers hold for the whole west coast to within a minute or so. They show the Ibiza sunset time for the date you choose, when golden hour begins, when civil dusk ends, and the compass bearing where the sun meets the sea. The arc traces the sun’s last three hours, with golden hour shaded, then the horizon, then the bands of dusk.

The sums run in your browser using the standard solar-position formulas (the same method as the NOAA solar calculator). The location is fixed at the cove, and times are shown in local Ibiza time, with summer time applied automatically.

How Ibiza sunset times change through the year

At the June solstice the sun sets at about 21:23. By the September equinox it is around 19:50, by mid-October a little after 19:15, and it reaches the earliest time of the year, about 17:35, in late December. The change is fastest around the equinoxes, when the time moves by about two minutes a day.

The bearing moves too. In midsummer the sun sets far to the north-west, at roughly 302°. Around the equinoxes it sets almost due west, and in December it sets well to the south-west, at about 240°. That is why a spot that frames the sunset perfectly in June can lose it behind a headland in November.

The best sunset spots on the west coast

Cala Comte. The western beach looks out over open sea with S’Illa des Bosc and the other islets in front. It is the most famous sunset on the island, and the rocks fill up an hour before. More in the Cala Comte guide.

Port des Torrent. The cove faces west out of the mouth of Sant Antoni Bay. In early summer the sun drops close to the outline of Sa Conillera. It is quieter than Comte and has a bus stop next to the sand. More in the Port des Torrent guide.

Cala Gració. Sa Conillera sits almost due west of the cove, so around the March and September equinoxes the sun goes down right behind it. It is a 15-minute walk from Sant Antoni. More in the Cala Gració guide.

Cala Bassa. The beach faces north, so walk out on the rocks towards the Torre d’en Rovira for an open view west. More in the Cala Bassa guide.

Golden hour and dusk, explained

Golden hour here means the time from when the sun is 6° above the horizon until sunset. The light is low, warm and soft, and the rocks and pines on the eastern sides of the coves light up orange. On Ibiza’s west coast it lasts 35 to 42 minutes.

Civil dusk runs from sunset until the sun is 6° below the horizon. The sky stays bright and the sea holds the colour; this is when the best photographs of the afterglow happen. It lasts roughly half an hour.

Nautical dusk ends when the sun is 12° below the horizon. By then the line between sea and sky has faded and the first stars are out over Sa Conillera.

Before you head out

The last boats back to Sant Antoni leave in the afternoon, so plan a bus, taxi or walk for the return; the getting there page has the options and a fare estimator. Bring a layer: on the rocks at Comte the breeze off the sea cools the air quickly once the sun has gone. And look at the 7-day forecast: high cloud often makes the best colour, while a hazy day can swallow the sun several minutes before the calculated time.
